The development of ‘typical’ diets or food intakes are required to enable an appropriate assessment of likely exposure of population groups to agricultural compounds residues, contaminant elements and selected nutrients, simulated through the food supply. Typical diets enable food consumption data and food sample analysis data to be combined, and the exposure of the population to be measured.

This document presents the final outline and content for the 2009 New Zealand Total Diet Study (NZTDS) being undertaken by the New Zealand Food Safety Authority (NZFSA). This content was agreed following consideration of the comments received from interested parties on the proposed outline for the 2009 NZTDS published 30 June 2008.

The 2009 New Zealand Total Diet Study (NZTDS) was undertaken by the then New Zealand
Food Safety Authority (NZFSA1), with management and technical input provided by the
Institute of Environmental Science & Research (ESR). The 2009 NZTDS is the seventh such
study, with previous ones undertaken in 1974/75, 1982, 1987/88, 1990/91, 1997/98 and 2003/04.

This report was prepared by the National Institute for Health Innovation, Auckland UniServices Ltd for New Zealand Food Safety to inform monitoring of the implementation of the HSR system in New Zealand. This report includes information on HSR uptake and the nutrient status of packaged products carrying HSR labels in New Zealand.
